Welcome to our website! As Chairman of Wimborne U3A you would expect me to be enthusiastic about our organisation and you would be right. Who would not be enthusiastic about an organisation that provides so much for members? There are opportunities to make and meet friends whilst doing something stimulating, and it can also provide the perfect antidote to those who would otherwise be lonely. In these days of increased longevity there are opportunities to fill your time with a variety of subjects to keep mind and body fit.
There are groups which can help you learn new subjects or refresh your knowledge on something you learnt at an earlier stage in your life. There are groups that ensure your body is given a workout at whatever pace you can accommodate. I have been fortunate to be able to attend a number of different subjects as a learner and I have witnessed the attendance of members in a wide variety of subjects. I have also been able to contribute as a leader. In all situations I could not help but be struck by the enthusiasm, good nature and friendliness of all involved.
I am constantly surprised that the U3A movement is not more widely known, there are still so many who have not heard of us. The Wimborne membership for 2016/17 currently stands at 624, 21 of which were new members last term, and we have groups offering 72 different activities. That’s astonishing for our small town!
Our group leaders are critical to the success of our U3A, they are all volunteers who freely give of their time, expertise, and experience. We are always on the lookout for new leaders, either to add more of our popular courses, or to offer new and interesting options. If you would like to become a group leader please contact me or any of the committee.
Talking of the committee, without their selfless dedication we could not continue to operate. Members serve for a limited number of years so we regularly add new people to the team and next term we will welcome two new people. New opportunities arise regularly so don’t be shy in putting yourself forward. We’d also like to hear from you if you think there is a new activity we should offer, or if you have tried to join a group and found it to be full. We don’t want you to be disappointed.
