Welcome to the Wimborne u3a! My name is Ashley Rowlands, and I am the new Chair. I was appointed in September, having taken over from Carol Macpherson, who has done a sterling job for the last 5 years. Her departure also coincided with five other members of the committee standing down, so it has been quite a sea change for the organisation. As you probably know we are a charity and all our activity is driven by volunteers, whether it’s the Committee, the organisers or those leading the groups and sessions. It's been a big learning curve for me and some of my colleagues, who have moved from just turning up for activities, to getting to grips with what makes the operation tick. I’m so impressed with what is being achieved, thanks to all our group leaders, who put themselves forward to share their love of their activity or subject by running groups, even inviting folk into their own homes.

Wimborne is a great town, with a vibrant community spirit, and so much to do and enjoy. u3a is an important part of that equation. The motto of the organisation nationally is ‘Learn Laugh Live’, and we should celebrate that we can bring people together through shared experiences. It’s so important that, once we have retired or started to step back from the pressured world of work, we get involved in activities which continue to stretch body and mind. It’s a truism to say that we never stop learning. However, above all else since I have become Chair, I have realised the power of u3a to create friendship and support, which often goes far beyond the activities themselves. For example, people who, for whatever reason, are isolated or lonely, can benefit hugely by getting involved in u3a. Laughing and living.

So, one of my ambitions is to try and grow u3a in this area. We have so many talented people around us, who could offer their knowledge and expertise to others. We also have a growing population, with the new build surrounding the town. Also, I think we should be trying to reach out to the rural villages to the West. My sense is that there are a lot of people who don’t know about u3a, what it is and what it offers. So, the mission for 2025 is to spread the word, and get more members and more activities available for them. It goes without saying that, if anyone reading this is interested in being part of this journey, getting involved in u3a in any capacity, I’d love to talk to you.

For now, I will just leave with those initial thoughts I’ve had. The world is in a difficult place right now, in so many ways, and if we can, in our modest Wimborne way, lighten lives through learning, laughter and friendship, then we’re fulfilling the u3a mission. Can I wish you all a joyful Christmas and a peaceful and happy New Year.
